The push for emigration and discouragement of return were seen yet again in Colonsay, where tenants would not agree to a mere relocation of five miles from the north end of the island to the south end where cultivation conditions were more favourable (Sheets, Chapter Four). Meanwhile, tensions between the two ethnic groups in Port de Grave intensified, and the Catholic population dwindled and disappeared by the turn of next century, earning the community the reputation of the place that “drove out the Catholics.” The final hold-out was Catholic merchant Peter Butler; after his funeral in 1901, the doors of the local Catholic chapel were closed and the building was torn down.622 The only remnant of the Catholic presence today is a desolate graveyard next to the site where that small chapel once stood. And although rank-and-file Orangemen were primarily interested in the fraternal aspects of the organization, the rhetoric of anti-Catholicism flared locally after these confrontations. That this should be the case may partly owe to the fact that the Sutherland evictions, which took place on the property of Lord and Lady Stafford during the first half of the nineteenth century, occupy a prominent place in the perception of the period, appearing in both contemporary records and modern accounts - notably those by popular historians.952 They have, over time, come to stand as a shorthand for the clearing process in the Highlands and Islands as a whole, recurrently featured in such memory media as literature or given prominence in museums’ interpretation, the most striking example being the Museum of Scotland.953 In many ways though, the Sutherland events are exceptional in Clearance inventory because of the many superlatives attached to them. The story of European settlement in Australia was born in brutal punishments and the hardships of convict life. The widow of Abercromby received a peerage and a pension of £2,000 for three generations; the officers and men were thanked by the House of Commons; all regiments were allowed to wear the emblem of the Sphinx on their colours; and the Highland Society of London distributed silver and bronze medals to the 42nd Highlanders and the relations of the many men killed at Alexandria.239, During the temporary truce that followed the British government demobilised and disbanded the fencibles and volunteers but when the Peace of Amiens collapsed in 1803, and the threat of invasion recurred, the Volunteer Force was revived, amassing some four hundred thousand men in local units across the Great Britain by 1805. Lord Altamont wrote at the time ‘An idea has gone about that the persecutions in the north have been fomented by government and however diabolical and absurd such a measure could be …it has gained belief and has disaffected a great body of Catholics of every rank throughout the kingdom’.494 Judging from their supine behaviour in Armagh, perhaps they were not deserving of too much sympathy.495 However, at least one Armagh magistrate supported Catholics. Malcolm could barely provide for his new wife and ailing mother on the west coast of Colonsay: ‘I am always working by price work and fishing…I don’t think that I shall go to America as long as my mother lives now, altho’ I don’t see any way of making a living here.’, Like his father, he stayed home where his wife’s Baptist faith assured them of ‘a great deal of good done by the Lord pouring down of his Spirit among the people and a great many of the people turned from darkness to light and from the power of Sin and Satan unto the Lord.’ After his mother died in 1862, his sister Janet left for Elderslie with her husband and family from Colonsay.297. ‘Catholics cannot possess a horse of greater value than £5’. The last judicial flogging in Australia took place in 1958 at Pentridge Gaol, Melbourne, when William John O’Meally was punished for his part in a prison break in which a prison officer by the name of Davis was wounded. Writing in the 1920s, Malcolm MacQueen notes that ";the intense loyalty of the early settlers to the Skye tradition burns in the breast of the present generation with a flame as steady as it did in any that has gone before";.535 This fervent commitment to a way of life, buttressed by isolation and intermarriage, meant that the Skye culture, including the use of Gaelic, was largely preserved in mid-nineteenth century Prince Edward Island. Pestilence and flooding were not uncommon at Clydebank and selectors like the Glovers replaced the squatters as the pioneering heroes. There are those who decide every point, philosophise on every subject, whose education consists of a few scraps taken from immoral and impious writers. I disagree. Some of the character traits of the people are evident in these case studies of two remote communities in the Hebrides, Colonsay and Benbecula. Taken together, these factors probably go a long way to explain why it took six weeks to procure a passage for the shanghaied Benbecula migrants. George Glover was born in about 1829 at Lower Maze, County Down, near Lisburn and in 1851 he married eighteen year old Ellen Dugan at Lisburn Cathedral in the Parish of Blaris. Men also joined the fencible Volunteers in response to patriotic fears over home defence, especially in 1797 when France had designs on the invasion of Ireland and there was hardly any naval presence north of the Forth of Clyde. Moreover emigration was hardly unique to the Highlands, not even the experience of depopulation. Whether or not they emigrated, the dilemma for parents was - could they see their children through to adulthood?4 If they stayed at home, old wife remedies such as rubbing soil on the umbilical cords of new-born babies were still endemic and continued to be a major cause of neonatal death, in this case from tetanus.5 Even common ailments such as measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough were major killers. He may have had a particular reason for sailing on this particular voyage which brought back miners for Stellarton Coalmines as he had close connections with those mines and the Carmichael/MacKenzie ships became major carriers to the coal industry. But what is more curious they cast their bark every season. It was escape, often accompanied by melancholy scenes of departure. The body had already attracted the congregation that had been exiting the nearby church when alerted by Murdoch Beaton‘s cries for help. Having negotiated from Lord Grey some flexibility in the ‘age rule’, Osborne ignored the age requirements for male emigrants in any case. And this was part of the reason why Irish Catholics rallied readily in those mid-century elections in Newfoundland, even though many of them were socially and politically better off than their Irish forebears: because everyone knew the script, and both middle class and popular class players were caught up in their part. Tenants who habitually fell behind on rents and who continued to have large families could bankrupt the best-heeled of landlords. In these fruitful years, cooperation, disputes, and decisions planted the seeds for the fateful years of decline to follow. Of the Highland regiments, the 75th was one of the few Queen’s regiments that were in India at the outset, and it took part in the storming and recapture of Delhi (14-20 September 1857).279 Most Highland regiments came as reinforcements, with the 78th serving under Brigadier-General (later Sir) Henry Havelock and raising the siege of the residency at Lucknow (25 September 1857). However, such episodes did not recur and there is no evidence that any level of supralocal organization existed outside this short-lived St. John’s-Harbour Grace-Carbonear nexus in the 1830s and early 1840s. George continued to develop his property and toiled hard, particularly during the harvest but ultimately his fifty eight-year-old body could no longer endure the strain. Perhaps the best known of them were the eight hundred settlers who were led by Lord Selkirk and in 1803 settled near Belfast in eastern Prince Edward Island. McKinney altered this to ten shillings.
